One more quick question...
being new to car audio, I have no idea what you do for wiring. Do you use stock wiring or some sort of upgrade?

I know for my home stereo (denon 2800 rcvr, klipsch Reference speakers) I used relatively large gauge wire, so would it be worthwhile to do so in a car too?

The guage wire depends mainly on two things, distance and power you are using. In most cases 16 guage to the doors and 12 guage for a sub are acceptable. It shouldn't cost too much and is probably more than what would be necessary.
