EDIT: on another note, i would replace it with an HMS (high performance) MTX 75. the problem is that tauruses automatics shift on the column (at least the older ones did) and SVT's shift on the floor. if you do this make sure you get a Torsen or Quaiffe (sp?) differential as 3L with a stock diff dont mix...
Dont bother going with a manual trans and $2000-2500 is way off! Your just making more work for yourself since the trans mounts, axles, etc dont line up.
Ive never heard of throwing a rod on a 3.0L? Sure you didnt just spin a rod bearing? Worst case senario, youll probably have to buy a new engine minus the intakes etc. If you just spun a rod bearing, just buy a used 99 3.0L shortblock for about $500-700. I dont think any kind of major prep work has to be done since your using the auto trans and 3.0L heads.
Jim, I'm really not sure what happened to it as I don't actually have the car - my old company does. They are just going by what the mechanic told them. It's definitely an internal problem probably of some significance.
The trans is just fine (by the way, shifts on the floor) and was replaced under warranty about 35K miles back (maybe a bit more) so I'm not so worried about that.
I guess I could just get the block w/o the tranny and save some cash and just drop her in.
So, I should def stick to the 1999 year, right guys? Somebody mentioned that I may have to swap heads if I go any NEWER, right?
I found quite a few 24V 3.0L's from '99 cars with low miles (tough to know if the mileage statements are true...is there a vin# on the block?). If I go with a motor out of a newer car (ie. out of the newer body style) I'm looking at more swapping, aren't I? I do know that there are some intake differences but I thought that was it???
Thanks again guys for your help! You guys are helping me make a decision to buy this car - I could have (as of the other day) passed on this offer). Sounds like a good deal to me though.
Another question:
EASY SWAP? Any tips/hints on this motor swap?
Later,
Nater
