My friend just upgraded his front 6x8 speakers in his Ranger to the new Kenwood 6x 8 3-way speakers. With the factory headunit (premium(ha,ha)) they sounded damn good! I am seriously considering ditching my Boston Acoustics for 2 sets. And here is the best part, they are only about $100 a set! IMO that is really good price for a damn fine speaker!

Then next b-day or Christmas maybe you can get another $250 (maybe inflation will get you a little more or less) you coud get a new headunit and bypass the factory amp.

Hows this.........since you only have $250 you might wanna check out the Aiwa MP3 player. It got good reviews, Plays mp3's and is pretty cheap. It also comes with preouts so you can add an amp and sub later on. Youll have an awesome soundin deck that is upgradeable and youll be able to do something that most of us cant...play mp3's. The thought of playin mp3's in my car is so sweet.

Definetly look online at auction sites like Ubid You can really spread that $250 around if you are carefull. I would recommend becoming friends with a guy/gal who works at Circuit City or the like. My brother-in-law used to work at Ultimate Electronics and I bought my Sony HU that retails at $900 through him for $250. laugh

All of my speakers cost about $250, including the amp that I use to drive everything. If it has speaker level inputs, I'd tell you to get the stuff I have. Components fronts, stock rears, and an 8" subwoofer.

But, if only doing one thing, the head unit will give you the most noticable increase in sound quality.

Unfortunately when I went take pictures my camera jammed and I can't seem to fix it. So, no pics for a while until I can afford a digital camera.

OH OH OH...I see...actually the PXA-H600 is just the signal processor!! Unfortunately I don't have a camera so I can't show you what I mean. The 7949 is the HU with the copper plated chassis. I got a great deal on the processor too. laugh

BTW I still stand by my belief that you should replace the speakers first and replace the HU later. Considering the financial situation and all. Later, Toadster

Definitely go with the HU first, then speakers. Especially since you are on a budget.
