I just saw Bruce willis on the o"reilly factor and was wondering whether anyone has seen another hollwood type that has been this supportive of the war on Iraq. His offer of 1 mill for sadaam has me thinking of moving to the mideast and doing alittle huntin' myself.

I don't understand why his $1 million would make you want to go if the original $25 million from the govt. didn't do it. Find Osama too and you double that.

I don't think military personal are eligible for the $25m from the gov't, but Bruce is offering that to the soilders.

He should offer the cash for Osama, too.

No military member can accept money for that. We have ethics codes we must adhere to and part of that includes acceptance of a gift valued over (I think $200)

Example, after the 2st Gulf War a wealthy Kuwaiti handed out brand new rolex watches to a group of army soldiers. Watches were valued at about 5K a piece. They were taken away from the soldiers.

Basically it boils down to our government doesn't want us to look like mercenaries. But if I stumbled on Saddam and got him I'd tell bruce to hold that 1 mil for me until I got out of the military. But then I'm in the AF and unless I get in a plane crash I'm not likely to "stumble" accross Sadaam.

I think that gift limit is for gifts from foreign sources but i might be mistaken.

No it's from any source. Like I said it's basically a "we're not mercenaries" thing.

I was a little rusty on the UCMJ since i was in basic in San Antonio way back in '93 and never bothered to look at it again but this is all that i have been able to find concerning gifts to AF members.

UCMJ

You're supposed to (I can't recall if it's required) to notify your commanding officer anytime you receive significant amounts of money like that even totally outside the bounds of your service, i.e the lottery. Specifically, any time when your quality of life grows in leaps and bounds.

Often time, if it's a huge amount (Pretty sure a million wouldn't count), you may actually get pressured to leave the service. Something about having lots of money to fall back on might make you insubordinate, along with the fact that people who fall into large sums of money usually fall into some pretty bad problems at the same time.

I don't have a copy of the UCMJ handy and with that thing being as enormous as it is I doubt I would want to sift through it anyway but I did find some stuff out of the PFE which takes pieces from the UCMJ so here goes:

"All DoD employees are prohibited from recieving pay or allowance or supplements of pay or benefits from any source other than the United States."

"DoD employees may not receive additional pay or allowance for disbursement or public money or for the performance of any other service or duty unless specifically authorized by law."

and under related prohibitions:
"Receving honoraria for performing officials duties or for speaking, teaching, or writing that relates to one's official duties"

I guess this stuff could be interpreted in several ways depending on how you look at it. I interpret by "United States" they mean the government. We're in an exercise right now and I'm working nights but when I get a chance I'll call the base legal office and ask them. I should be able to get a straight answer and a UCMJ reference for ya one way or the other.

In fact I will even call them and ask "Hey if I capture Saddam can I accept the 1 million dollars that Bruce Willis is offering?" they oughta get a kick out of that.
