Hi, I was wondering if anyone has ever hooked up something like a car subwoofer in the home. I am a freshman at college in a dorm currently, so I am planning for a future apartment or something. I was thinking of adding this subwoofer either to a full home audio system or just a bookshelf system with an extra output/input. I also imagine I would need a heavy duty AC/DC convertor, though my car sub is only attached to a 300 watt amp. If anyone is wondering why I would do this, it's that I won't have a car for the next few years and the sub won't be serving any purpose if I don't put it to use, plus that would be alot of bass for indoors. Anyone think this would be possible? Thanks for any input. -Jeff

You are better of buying a home audio sub. It's already powered and you just plug it into the wall and the system. None of the converter crap to worry about. Check out Ubid.com

Not much on there right now but here's the low end!

I'm not saying there should be a capital punishment

labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?

Why would you need a converter? Are you wanting to use the amp that powered it as well?
Should be able to use it just like a regular home woofer. It will probably sound better on your home system than it did in your car. What brand/size/model?

Unless you're planning to run the sub off a car battery in the house, you'll need something to convert it to A/C current.

A sub is just a speaker. A *powered* sub would need a source, in this case a DC converter. I agree, just hook it up and see how it sounds.

You're going to need a tremendous 12 volt power supply to feed a 300 watt amp. I'm guessing it will need at least a 30 amp capacity power supply, if not more. You don't find many commercially available 12 volt power supplies that supply that kind of power. A 12 volt battery charger with a 50 amp engine-starter option isn't feasible either, as the 50 amp rating is for very brief use, and a battery charger is not filtered well enough to supply 12 volt electronics.
If you're going to try to power just the sub alone from your home stereo, make sure the impedences match...many modern home stereo amps won't take a speaker load below 8 ohms.
I agree that just buying a home subwoofer is probably the best route to go.

True, a home woofer is recommended, but I'm guessing he is just wanting to make use of a sub that would otherwise become a paperweight.

Beahcboy is right about the power supply. You won't find an AC/DC converter with enough power to drive the amp, or it will not be cost effective. THe cheapest way to implement your idea is to use an old stereo receiver to power the sub. Heck, you can get a 100w KHL at Best Buy for $90.
I'll warn you that it may sound like crap. Subwoofers tuned for a car with a lot of cabin gain often sound bad in a larger room. It is possible that a new box would help, it that were the case.

I have seen in new constructions where they've used a box & mounted it up from underneath the floor & the sound would then come through what would appear to be a heating vent...kinda cool & you get a good bass through the floor

Or better yet, use the basement as the enclosure....
