You're going to need a tremendous 12 volt power supply to feed a 300 watt amp. I'm guessing it will need at least a 30 amp capacity power supply, if not more. You don't find many commercially available 12 volt power supplies that supply that kind of power. A 12 volt battery charger with a 50 amp engine-starter option isn't feasible either, as the 50 amp rating is for very brief use, and a battery charger is not filtered well enough to supply 12 volt electronics.
If you're going to try to power just the sub alone from your home stereo, make sure the impedences match...many modern home stereo amps won't take a speaker load below 8 ohms.
I agree that just buying a home subwoofer is probably the best route to go.
