I have been told my universal joint maybe the problem as to why my car thumps when I go to brake. It only does it on occasion-every third or fourth time I brake. Can this be the cause?

you could have movement in your lower control arm.. Best advise, take it to a shop they usually can look at it for nothing and give you a better idea as to what is moving.

you could have weak strut mounts, there are a few different items on the suspenion that will cause a "thump" noise when braking
