Over the course of 4000 mi, my car loses about as much synth oil as yours did. But, because I prefer to keep my cars for a long time, I'd much rather trade-off minor oil loss for superior wear-reduction in the powertrain.
PS: Please cash my damn check. You're messing-up my accounting.
I only went one change on the Castrol again, so I doubt there was much buildup.
I deposited all the checks yesterday

I don't know about the new cars, but they used to say that up to 1 quart per 1,000 miles was acceptable. Seems a bit high! You may have a leak and don't realize it - many leaks only manifest themselves while driving when the system is at pressure. Also a common area for Duratec leaks is at the oil pan. That's where mine drips. I loose about .25 quarts after about 6 to 7,000 miles.

You got one well-wired bank to the Fed Reserve, Lance. My check cleared the next day.

1995 with 165,00 miles. Only use oil if crank up the RPM's. I am about one quart between chages but some of that is a leak.

My job changed a little so I am in the office most of the time. Only have 73,000 or so miles now on mine. Never see any loss on the stick but once in a while there is a drop on the ground. It leaked a lot from the pan years ago while under warranty, the dealer installed a new pan gasket. I expermented with my wife's tour. Used Mobil 1 and switched back to regular oil, still 5w-30. The synthetic leaked a little. When I used Mobil 1 on previous cars it would do the same. I use the rag test after the oil gets near and over 3k miles. Place a drop of oil from the dipstick on a clean rag or paper towel. If it stays the same color as it moves out from center the detergent additive is still OK. If it leaves rings of dirt, it's done for. Reach inside the oil filler cap and see if you get a finger full of gunk or dirt. If you do, you are not changing the oil often enough. The dirt is no longer being held by the oil and is deposited on the interior. This is a good way to check an engine when looking for a used car.

I need to put in a cup, maybe a pint between changes... say 3500-4500 miles or so. Using Mobil1 5w30. I did lose oil rapidly once before into my cooling system (though no water in the oil) while using a certain cooling system additive... though curiously the oil loss did not occur when using regular coolant without the additive. To be sure, I flushed the coolant with a block sealer as well as used a crankcase sealant before oil change and problem has never happened since (over a year). Never did try that coolant additive again... As for oil burning, not much more than the cup or two I mentioned.

At face value, that seems to make sense -- especially when using a generic, no dyes, no nothing paper towel. Basically, a paper towel acts as a low-grade filtering medium ...
Gonna have to try that, then get the oil tested as a control.

I notice that when I go on long trips (over 300 miles) that my car uses a little bit of oil. I broke the motor in properly (as suggested by SVT) which means I never went over 3500 rpm for the first 2K and thereafter, I slowly stretched the rpm's every couple weeks. Also I've been told that oil usage is just a FoMoCo thing

I've only had to add oil between changes once, and I think that was due to a leak which has since been fixed. I just switched to Mobil 1 this past weekend (55K). Hopefully, I won't start using oil now.
