I just got my oil changed yesterday and I was told that I was a quart low.... never once before was I told my oil was low - if it is true, how many others have this problem and where should I start looking for it? Write yes or no and tell me about it.
I have 169,000 on my '95 2.5L MTX tour. - Thanks, JOE

No where to look. You have 170k. Rings must be getting worn.

I have gone through a quart of oil every oil change since I bought my car new 5 years ago. So, from less than 10 miles up to 75,000 miles I "use" a quart every 5,000 miles.

I have never lost any oil on either of my Duratecs, one with 70k and one with 37k. Granted, you're way beyond my mileage... How often do you check the oil? I try to check all my fluid levels at least once a week. Keep a close eye on things for the next few months. It may have just been a leaky seal on the filter or drain plug. Put some fresh cardboard under the engine (big enough to sit under the filter and drain) after a drive and leave it overnight, maybe you'll catch a leak. Otherwise, refer to previous posts...

NO, my car doesn't lose/burn oil... 47,800 miles though, so I guess it could start burning oil in the future.

You know, as much as I love my car, I honestly never check the oil level. I don't smell burning oil, but my car does run rich most of the time due to a bad O2 sensor. I am positive there are no leaks also.
Isn't it true that you have to let the car sit for a few minutes before checking the oil?
I believe that is true and the oil change guys checked it immediatly after I pulled in after driving 70 miles. Soooo I am thinking because there was no sign of the oil loss before, that it was low or looked low because they didn't let it sit.... I guess I will find out in about 3,000 miles :-) - Thanks guys/girls - JOE

Yeah, I usually wait 5 minutes so that all the oil settles back down into the pan, and to let everything cool off a little bit.

Before developing some leaks around the pan and maybe the front crank seal, I never dropped more than 1/2 qt. over the course of a 3000 mile change interval.

At 109k and never lost a drop over the past few 7k oil change periods.

Now my tbird, that's a different story...she was losin 1qt a day ...that's why she's gettin a new engine. I had the wrong PCV valve for about a week... 18psi in the oil pan is not good for your gaskets .

Try a different (better) brand of oil.

When I used Quaker state I would be down a litre when the next change was due (5K km)... when I tried Castrol, it stayed full. Needless to say I haven't used "Q" since!! It wouldn't burn it (as far as I could tell)... I thought maybe it was just evaporating some component out of the oil (??).

BTW, most cheapie oil change places around here use Quaker state unless you tell them to use a different brand (then they charge you more).
