My car did same thing. No start, tow ro dealer, ran fine. DEaler would not check further.
Changed external fuel filter, no change. Car ran, but below 1/2 tank acted up.
Pull pump out, (see how-to ) cleaned round strainer on bottom of plastic pump holder, cleaned inlet strainer on inlet to pump.
Runs great again.

Yesterday on my way home, I was at a stop light, and my Contour just died and would not start back up again. Temp was normal, 1/2 tank of gas, no check engine light, it just died. I tried to start it, and it turned over but would not start. Since it would not start, I had to get my Contour off the road. I had help getting the car to the gas station it died in front of. I can turn the key, and it tries to start but won't.
After the tow back to my friends shop, he turned the key and then it started right up. Lately when I try to start the car it hesitates, then I turn the key for the 2nd time, then she starts right up. We think 1 thing. Fuel pump. Does anyone else have any ideas? Has this happened to anyone else? Please, any ideas would be very helpful.
Have someone tighten down the + and - terminals to your battery.

If the engine turned over but would not start, the battery terminals are supplying voltage. It's not likely to be that. If the engine wouldn't turn over, then I would agree, a loose terminal could cause this.

I think that he, along with myself, read her descriptino, and saw "hesitates, then turns over", and read that to mean.. "silence when turning key the first time" ... upon further reading of subsequent posts, I began to see what was actually being said..

The Fram fuel filter is fine. You're wasting time and money replacing parts you know aren't the cause. I'm betting pump. If not then Horseydung's fix.

Well, after all of this trouble it is fixed. It was none of the above. We didn't change out anything, I didn't have the time. Well, yesterday morning we were forced to troubleshoot it, for it would turn over, but not start. So, we towed it back to my friends shop and we hooked it up to that slick Snap On code reader and we troubleshot from there. We replaced the crankshaft position sensor, and it was fixed. Finally. Now I haven't had a problem since we installed the new one. She starts up without a problem. Funny, all of that for a $25 part. And it was very easy to change out as well. Thanks for all the help. I hope this helps anyone who may run into this someday.

Good catch.
Not a common failure on these cars.
