Most attorneys will take a case like this on a 'if we win I get a percentage' basis. I would talk to one and normally the attorney can surmise if they have a 'win-able case'. It sounds like you have at least a case that could be won for nothing else other than maybe just restoring your car to it's original condition. Some states will automatically give an attorney his fees, some states you'll have to sue for those fees. But any good attorney worth his degree should be able to tell you within 30 minutes if the laws in your state cover shoddy or inept machanics. You may also be able to recover some funds for 'implied usage', which means you can get back your costs of having to go back and forth and be without a car. But only an attorney can tell you that, and most will offer a free consultation to see if you have a leg to stand on. Call the state bar association in your city and they will refer an attorney to you after you explain your predicament.

And, sometimes just having an attorney call the repair shop will put the fear of God in them and they'll pay up, no questions asked. But go see an attorney right away.
