Tragically Hip - Locked in the Trunk of a Car
Dire Straits - Brothers in Arms/Telegraph Road
Both have great base and quiet moments with crisp cymbals.

I have test tracks for imaging and blahblkhablah but for listening purposes I really like club/dance music:
Dj kaycee escape (original mix) has a mix of everything in it. Its fast its slow, it goes high it goes low. bumps so hard my tires blow hahah...sorry..

but seriously to test your system you really should play some classical music. I really enjoy Bach and motzart personally but there are tons of others. The bass..is there trust me.

Hey, any of the people above who said they actually have a testing CD (like the one Crutchfields sells), can someone burn me a copy and mail it to me? E-mail me privately at sujpatel@home.com

And for the record, I used Barenaked Ladies - Stunt, to tweak my system.

You can make your own. There are shareware programs to generate tones, save to wav file and burn. My brother made a couple for me. One with sine waves at frequencies, the other has some pink noise, some white noise, and some other tones. Search your favorite shareware site for "tone generator".

If I was going to work tomorrow I'd burn them for you, but I don't have time to do that tomorrow. I can probably just bring them to SZ and let you borrow them, and then mail them back or something.

Not that I've had too much time to test audio systems, as I'm just in the market for one now... but whenever I feel like seeing what my home system can do, here are my choices:

1) Live Phish recordings -- if you have a good quality recording, you can really use it to see what kind of imaging/sound you can get out of a system. Some CD players make them sound muddy. If there is enough separation in the system, you can tweak it to hear all 4 instruments, plus vocals.

2) St. Germain's album "tourist" -- great acid jazz album -- beats, acoustic instruments (trumpets, flutes, etc..) great bass lines. Lot's of definition.

3) Metallica "master of puppets" -- after metallica's original few albums, which were all guitar, and before their later albums which some people say are 'soft', this one has a great mix of rhythm, power, and great instrumentality.

4) Miles Davis "Kind of Blue" (remastered)-- if you don't own this you must get it NOW!! This is the smoothest, softest jazz album in the world, and if your stereo can reproduce Miles' muted trumpet, coltrane's tenor sax with the full dynamic range needed to appreciate the genius behind the music, then you've got a winner.

The first track on Chronic 2001. I keep that track on replay while adjusting the gain on the amp for my subwoofer until I start getting just the right amount of resonation.

Having a separate amp for my door speakers and subwoofer makes it a whole lot easier for me though. I just set the door speaker amp for high pass and the sub amp for low pass and this keeps the music crisp and bass response tight rather than distorted.
