I'm racking my brains and I can't come up with another gun apart from the HK P7 , which is chambered for 9mm. IIRC, they aren't cheap but what's nice is the squeeze-cock feature. It's truly a "grab and shoot" auto. I'm thinking it has close to the same dimensions as the Sig p239, though, which sounds like a downside. Never shot one so I can't comment much past what I already have.
Something else to look at, though.
I'll be honest: the kick on the Defender was a b!tch. The bad part about it was finding the sights after the shot, which I think accounted just about equal with the recoil in terms of displeasure. It just didn't line back up as quickly like a longer, heavier auto does. I only got to run 2 clips through the gun, so I definitely didn't have time to get used to it, but I probably could have had it the entire day and still wouldn't "click" with me.
Then again, you aren't looking for something to mount a scope on and snipe with, either. If you can handle the recoil, you will probably be as good with it as anything else up close.

Sorry. I haven't finished reading your last post because "squeeze-cock" made me burst out laughing. Sorry, I'm trying to be serious here.

OK. You have me worried about the recoil now. Too bad I can't think of anyone with the Colt or Kimber. There's a place nearby that will rent you a gun at their range. I'm doubtful that they'll have either, but I'll give them a call tomorrow.
I thought I'd like the P232, but the more I think about it, the less I feel I want a .380. I wish the P239 was a tad smaller to make a difference.
What about the S&W 3913? Any idea on it?

If I can't hold a gun moderately steady past 4 shots and line it back up fast, then IMHO, recoil is a bit much for ME. I'm all of 150 lbs., but given that I hit the weights and exercise VERY routinely, I'm no wuss by any means. If you're of a larger frame than I and have a few more pounds, then it may not bother you as much. I will say that I'm NOT a fan of recoil, so I would put myself in the "recoil-sensitive" camp, as previously mentioned. The less of it I have to deal with, the faster and more accurate I can place rounds where I want them...
I've seen some pretty beefy guys handle guns just fine that give me fits, so don't run screaming from then yet. Definitely see if you can get a hold of one an try it out. It's not like dropping the hammer on, say, a 4" S&W .44 Mag (been there, done that, NOT going back ).

Sorry. No clue on the Smith. I can't remember the last time I picked up a S&W auto.

I'm roughly the same size, and only 5'7", which is why I'm looking at the .45 . I can't say that I've had problems with recoil, but then again, my experience is limited to the few that I've mentioned. My worst experience with recoil was shooting slugs, and not expecting much of a "kick" . I feel I'm leaning to the Colt and Kimber. With a difference of only 10 bucks, I don't know which I'd consider. Also, I don't know much about Kahr or Springfield Armory.

If i were to go out and buy a gun right now it would be no ?'s asked hk usp 40 or 45. and not the compact, those kick a little too much for my taste, but the full sized are soo nice they may be a little ugly, But i like them a lot better than glocks. On a side note ive shot a few kimbers(dont remember wich model's) and they were very smooth compared to other 1911 ive shot.

Had a buddy that had a Colt Defender and I didn't think it kicked that hard but the first gun I fired as a kid was a .357 so I don't really worry much about recoil I guess. If you can find a good compact .40 that is the way I would go. Can't think of any compact models off the top of my head and its late so you'll have to look but a .40 is a great round for a few reasons: Doesn't kick as hard as the .45 but still has almost the same amount of knockdown power, and its cheaper to shoot.
Personally I would go for the Defender as it's a sweet gun BUT if you are even a bit worried about the recoil find someone who has one that you can shoot first. You don't wanna spend that kinda cash on a gun that you end up being afriad of or unable to properly shoot for whatever reasons and you definitely don't want to be carrying a gun under those conditions.
I'd check into the baby glocks also. Glocks are very nice pistols.

I quess i am not very recoil sensitive, a guy i used to shoot with in fl used to bring something new to the range for me to shoot but he had his 4" 44 with him everyday and that was one of my favorite guns to shoot. The one gun that relly got me was his thompson encore in .450 marlin OUCH i was actually bruised after shootin that . The only thing that gets me about the large caliber compacts is the sharpness of the recoil.

If it's a .45, then I wouldn't be quite so worried about kick (as long as you don't flinch when you shoot) because that flying ashtray it spits out will do some damage right away...IF you hit. You should look hard at the HK USP Compact line, and see if you can try out that gun in different calibers. They're available in 9mm, .40, .357Sig, and .45, so one should fit your needs.
I have a friend, though, who carries a .22Mag autoloader (Automag II) as his personal defense handgun, and I'll tell you...you may not get as much stopping power per individual shot, but I could put FIVE .22" holes in a head silhouette in 2-3 seconds with that thing, and those bullets carry a lot of velocity. He said he preferred the controllability and speed of followups over the "anything that doesn't start with a 4 is too small" argument.
