I think it depends on what brand of 6X9 you try, and the shape of the basket. I tried a pair of 6x9 Sonys in the front doors of my '95. They didn't fit in the hole obviously. The problem was that the door panel hit the speaker face, because they didn't go into the hole far enough.
Also all Tours came with 6x8s to the best of my knowledge.
