There seem to be a few people who can't get 6x9s to fit.

I think it depends on what brand of 6X9 you try, and the shape of the basket. I tried a pair of 6x9 Sonys in the front doors of my '95. They didn't fit in the hole obviously. The problem was that the door panel hit the speaker face, because they didn't go into the hole far enough.
Also all Tours came with 6x8s to the best of my knowledge.

Well Timid do not forget to plan ahead with your installation and research what has to be done to get the job done that you want. Not all installer are in the know. Any way
use these adaptors from www.partsexpress.com
to resolve your 6X9 loudspeaker depth problem: Metra 82-4200 6X9 to 5X7 hole adaptor. Also do not for get that 6X9s do generate more bass and so will excite vibrations within the door panel. So do not forget to get yourself some vibration damping like dynamat and foam 6X9 speaker Baffles to stop the back wave other speakers from rattling the glass metal and plastic back their and do not forget to stuff that flexible baffle with some poly-Fill stuffing
to increase the size of the baffle area. Simply dropping in a new driver is just not enough if a higher quality sound is what you are looking for.

So tell me David do you think that those 6X9s would fit if you were to use an adaptor like the one below Metra 82-4200 6X9 to 5X7 hole adaptor. This adaptor is mounted to the bottom of the speaker to move the face of the speaker forward by an inching increasing rear (magnet structure) clearance. Do you think that with this repositioning that the door panel (leather and plastic) will not properly close back on to the door (the metal) without touching the tweeter housing?

tdavidk,
My tour came with 5x7s stock. They are really crappy. They have a plastic frame and a thin paper cone and handle a hefty 20watts. My stereo was a tape player whick is what led me to my theory about crap factory setups coming with 5x7s. I haven't ripped into my brother's car yet (also a 96) but I'm certain his factory speakers were better than mine. If you want, I'll sell you my 5x7s for $200! Let me know if you are interested!

First APT CSVT this is not english class, while your intentions may be good its rather annoying to hear someone tell you to use proper english and they may be less likely to post and share the experience they have..and c'mon big guy is missing a comma or a period going to hurt that much?

anyway
before you spend money replacing all 4 speakers. I'll let you know what I did to handle this situation and hopefully it will help you.

First I purchased a sub and amp combo, then I removed my rear speakers to help vent the bass in from the trunk into the cabin. Once I did this I noticed the front stage in my car noticeably increased..maybe I should say audibly? =) anyway..I still couldnt turn my front speakers up enough to keep up with the bass so I purchased some "bass blockers" (there capacitors that block lower frequencies) this allowed me to play my music louder and not have the stock speakers distort. a good explanation of bass blockers can be found here:
http://www.caraudioforum.com/Forum3/HTML/007362.html

however if you do not wish to add a subwoofer I suggest purchasing a set of components for the front, purchasing a small 2 channel amp to power them and removing your rear speakers.
You can get a nice set of entry level Focal 6.5's from www.zalytron.com for cheap and then purchase a small amp this one is nice:
http://www.woofersetc.com/showitem.taf?item_ID=328
and it would sound ALOT better than for unamped 6x9's.

If you'd like to see a picture of the Focal component set just let me know, mine just came in and I can scan in a pic or two if you'd like.

I hope this huuuuuuuge post proved helpful,

We all make spelling and punctuation mistakes in our haste. But use ANY puncuation is all I ask for. It's hard to understand what someone is trying to get across if I don't know where one sentance begins and the next starts. I believe I wasn't the only one asking for it either.

APT i def. do not want to argue about something as silly as this. You are correct that punctuation is helpful.

I guess im the new guy around here but wanted to say thanks for taking the time to help people out and explain things.

when I redo anything electrical on my Contour, I leave the factory connectors the hell alone and make plugs to fit the existing harness. This way if I decide to swap back to the old stuff there is no problem and also if some weird problem occurs I simply unplug and redo instead of butchering the harness to shreds. On my factory speaker wires I simply used two spade connectors and plugged them in and then hooked them to the aftermarket pigtail to direct them to the speakers.
