i have a 98 svt, with an off-road y-pipe. it sounds raspy (not that i didnt expect that). i dont see buying a bosal or borla catback being worth it. i'm interested in making a custom cat-back for a deep sound with minimal drone and rasp. anyone know any good suggestions for the best setup? thanks.

Welcome to CEG.
try www.trubendz.com or search for trubendz here on the site. Lots less $, and w/ a Magnaflow it'll certainly sound deep. Plus, it's 2.5" piping. You can also search for "custom exhaust" or "best exhaust" and find lots of info in lots of posts.

My SVT has a modified stock system.

From the cat back is stock pipes but with 4" round magnaflows at the rear positions and this weekend I installed a 40 series Flowmaster after the cat (its a very tight fit and requires some "adjusting" of the heatshield to get it to fit)

The sound is low, deep, clean and about as loud as a stock SVT system with the resonator removed. But has the interior sound of a stock system.

I would imgine that using rear mufflers with a larger case than a 4" round would maintain the low deep tone but quiet it down a little.

What i did for my custom exuast was went to my buddy at Midas. We took out the resantor and replace it with a glass back and cut off the mufflers and put on 3inch rolled tips. I also have a off road y pipe, and my exaust sonds real nice. Um i think i paid like $120 for parts and labor, but then my friend gave me a huge discount too. But it shoudn't be to much!
