Not all filters are created equal, or there wouldn't be a discussion.

Motorcraft is a fine filter--probably the best in it's price range for our cars. Although there are many that are suitable.

For the hardcore car geek, there are four essential factors to consider in determining the "best" filter. Filtering efficiency at x microns, filter capacity, flow rate, and burst strength. Those $(2-digit) filters, in most cases, give you more of all of these things. Overkill? Maybe, but you're not just paying for "marketing."
