You can hook up just one coil and it will work. Although that is not recommended, and I would certainly not recommend doing that. Their are alot of things you can do in car audio that is not recommended. Just like using a woofer that is rated at 600watss rms and putting 1300watts to it. Although that is not recommended it can be done but the life of the woofer is drastically shortened. "thats just an example" So in conclusion, if you don't care about shortening the life of the woofer then don't worry about it and use only 1 coil per sub.
