Agree that it should not harm the woofer if only one coil is hooked up.

You can hook up just one coil and it will work. Although that is not recommended, and I would certainly not recommend doing that. Their are alot of things you can do in car audio that is not recommended. Just like using a woofer that is rated at 600watss rms and putting 1300watts to it. Although that is not recommended it can be done but the life of the woofer is drastically shortened. "thats just an example" So in conclusion, if you don't care about shortening the life of the woofer then don't worry about it and use only 1 coil per sub.

Well, actually, using one coil will not shorten the life of the woofer. I guess the point that we are all trying to make in different ways, is to get a woofer that matches the system requirements or change the system around the woofer.

Here is a quote from an unnamed source who is more knowledgeable than most in the ways of the speaker.

What interests us with woofers
in given boxes are their thermal maxima and mechanical maxima. A good
software program informs us at what frequency and power each is reached.

Forgoing the use of one coil has no effect on the mechanical capacity of a
driver but does sacrifice a bit of thermal capacity. Put another way, the
thermal capacity is reduced compared to the mechanical capacity.

Those who plan to operate a woofer near these maxima would be wise to
select a unit with more favorable parameters or to multiply the number of
woofers until they can operate at all times outside the distress range.

To translate, using a single voice coil will not damage the speaker, but why by a DVC woofer if only one of the VCs will be used. And also, multiple woofers splitting power are ALWAYS preferred to running a single woofer with the same power.

Like I said it will work, but I still wouldn't recommend it. 154.3db

dnewma04 -
I have not bought the subs yet, I was waiting until Friday to do so, payday, ya know.. But yes, I am big on sound quality, not name brand.. My buddy has 3 JL W6 12's in his Taurus and I like the bass response from his car, I just like the sound of "tighter" bass from 10's. So if there is a better sound quality bass sub than the JL's I would surely be interested. I believe I read you stating about the Shiva subs but I cannot seem to find them around my area, No. Va. and I guess you would call me a little paranoid but I really don't trust products, especially electronics bought over the internet. So I'm not trying to start a holy war over subs here like I see so often, just looking for another options with the MTX Thunder 6500D monoblock amp 250 x 1 which I have bought, that will have very good sound quality, tight bass and be able to get "loud" if I feel the need.. Especially coming home from my job when a little loud Slipknot or the like is needed to relax..
