I'm going to lean toward a fuel problem. No check engine light at all? sounds like as you "get on it" and your secondaries are about to kick in, you're starving for more fuel.
if i were you, i'd refrain from trying to race honda's, especially vtec's. i have a duratec, but my daily driver is a 92 accord with a 95 JDM H22a vtec motor, and by the time my duratec is starting to whine out, my vtec is just kicking in, bringing me up past 8,000rpm. so, since i drive a mystique, you can't call me rice, but i will put my accord up against any duratec/svt. i've already smoked an SHO... he was not a happy camper... just a very surprised and confused guy lololol.
