Very odd - got all the 60k stuff done a few weeks ago (and then some - DMD installed, new motorcraft spark plugs, flush coolant, and of course fresh Mobil 1 and motorcraft filter), and a week ago, I noticed that the car guns itself when it starts up - to 2200 or 2500 RPM, then holds for a second or two, then slowly drops down to 1500 RPM (where it normally would start to) for about 5-10 more seconds, then comes down to about 1000. Otherwise, it runs as good as new and idles fine the rest of the time (and on hot starts it is fine too).
Engine is stock except DMD and K&N drop in air filter. I've driven it all of its 61k miles. Mobil 1 for the past 45k.
Any ideas? I still have a few months under ESP left.
Thanks,

Sounds Like throttle hang.....Go to CEG main website and go to Fixes...read the throttle hang fix...that should be your problem.

Sounds like this problem recently started so I doubt it's TH.

5W-30. 6 quarts. Same as always.
I didn't think it was TH, since it does this only right when it starts when the engine is cold.
Started up normally for the first two weeks after doing the service.
Anyone w/ DMD have a similar issue? Maybe I'll reset the computer tonight and see what happens.
I'm just worried that it is going to prematurely wear the engine - revs cranked up before oil has made its way up.
Thanks, Steven

Just try it...I hate when people blow this off...It costs less than a quarter to do and takes less than 5 minutes. Myself and others had the same problem, and guess what, TH fix fixed it...If it doesn't work, go from there, but this is the cheapest and fastest solution to try first.

Take it to Ford. Could be the TH problem. They just replaced the IAC on my car and it fixed the TH problem. If you have the warranty use it!

Well, you can't argue with that, though...He's right, if you've got the warranty, use it.

I could be hallucinating, but I think I read in the Ford Service Manual for the Contour that our cars have a programmed warmup idle sequence when the ambient temperature is cold. My car does the exact same routine as mentioned in the first post - it doesn't hang, it just takes about 20 seconds to go through the idle program. Regardless, it's not a bad idea to let it do its thing, as getting oil up into the top of the engine when cold is crucial, as long as it isn't screaming at high RPM when dry.
