Knowing what your kids are up to and knowing where they are going one saturday night are two completely different things. Obviously if your child is constantly out of the house and not telling you where she/he is going, then parents should do something. If the kid just goes out on the weekends then why should the parent know his/her every move? "Under my roof, my rules". Yeah that's a great motto if you want to be the household tyrant and possibly alienate your kids. Any good parent should know that compromises always have to be made.
Its only going to take one time of the parents confronting the kid about what he did, when he knows there was noone around to catch him and he will know somethings up. Soon, he will just take the bugged car to his friends and then go out in the friend's car where mommy and daddy cant watch.
Is it a good idea, possibly. Does it slightly worry me that you have a little box informing the parents about the child? Somewhat. Why dont the parents just give the local police access to the data. When the kid speeds, he/she gets a speeding ticket mailed to the house.
EDIT: Having one of these in your car when you take it to the mechanic might not be a bad idea.
