Yes, I agree, pull the cable. I've never had any kind of error resulting for disconnecting the battery.
Alternatively, you can also pull some fuses under the hood to clear the memory. I do this only to save the settings on my aftermarket stereo. On both my '98s, I pull fuses 4 and 11 for about 20 minutes. Edit: You don't list your year or anything, so be careful. Fuses may be different for different years.
