Apparently it was sunk in shallow water in a busy part of the English Channel. At least one other cargo ship had already run into it.
Of course the cars also were full of oil and some gas.
I think the auto manufacturers were also concerned about people getting their hands on car parts and selling them.

That was BMW's biggest worry. If one salvaged part made it into a US market vehicle and caused an accident/damage/etc., BMW would risk having a multi-million dollar lawsuit against it, thanks to our sue-happy legal system.
