No bashing intended here, but I'd have to agree about Sony. While their top of the line stuff is usually of exceptional quality, their mid-level and lower stuff is usually sub-par when compared to the similarly priced competition. This seems appearant to me in most of their product lines.
Currently, I'm running a Kenwood eXcelon KDC-PS709. It's the entry-level model for the 1st generation eXcelon line. I chose it because it didn't have that ridiculous MASK and does have 4V pre-outs. I also like the internal x-overs, which makes setup a breeze.
I'll probably replace it in the next year or so with a mp3 HU. But, I'm waiting for somebody besides Sony/Aiwa to come out with one that isn't incredibly expensive like the Kenwood.
Good luck to all on whatever you run.

That is because sound "operates" on a logarithmic scale [now I'll have to go back to my college textbook to verify ]; it isn't linear. Oh...I "nominate" my head unit: the Alpine 3DE-7886 (now 3DE-7887). It flawlessly plays any CD-R that I've burned (and I've used seven different brands thus far). It doesn't play MP3s, it doesn't have CD-text capability, but I still think that it's a solid unit. I've had mine for three years (and with two Contours) without any major problems. Here is a picture of the 3DE-7887 [This message has been edited by Reg E (edited March 29, 2001).]

That is correct, a 1000 watt amp would be 2 times as loud as a 100 watt amp. A 10000 watt amps would be 4 times as loud as a 100 watt amp.
Doubling the wattage results in a 3 dB increase in volume, which is typically thought of as the smallest amount of sound that is considered noticeable.

I bought an Alpine 7863. LOVE IT!!!!! I'm not trying to start a fued or anything. I'm just trying to put my experience out there for you to make an educated decision. Do those Sony's have low pass and high pass filters. I can set up everything basically from my head unit. It's great.
[/B] I second the 7863 love....

I have to nominate my HU. I have a Pioneer DEH-p7200 and it plays every CD-R I have ever tried. When you burn one, you can name the title of the CD, Artist name, and even the tracks and they will show up on the HU. I have to knock the flat black panel Sony. It's cool and all, but any idiot that looks into your ride can tell it is still in there. Personally, I wouldn't pay that much money for a HU that doesn't detach! Just my two cents...

I have a Sony Xplod ES CDX-C7050X in my F-150. If you ask me for the money ($199) you couldn't ask for a better deck. I have had absolutely no problems with it.
It has 3 sets of 4v pre-outs, cd text, disc&station naming, it plays CD-Rs, has a multi color display, flip down detachable face, hi-pass and lo-pass filters built in, wireless remote, plus a pretty stout internal amp. The F-150 also has 4 6x8s in it, and that deck made the factory speakers sound A LOT louder and clearer.
I'm not trying to get everyone to run out and buy a Sony, but I can tell you from experience that mine works very well, and IMHO for the money, it can't be beat.

Yikes! Sony just released their new line of stuff... and wow -- I want one.
Their active black panel is now very similar to the kenwood's D-mask, which means this: You can flip the face into the unit, or, unlike last year's sonys, you can now TAKE IT WITH YOU if you want to. The top line CDX-M770 is expensive, but wow, DSP, 7-band eq, all the cd text, naming, etc. Plus, comes with the wireless remote and the wired steering column remote. Looks sweet...
Now that I have a job, I might just have to save up. Who knows.

I have had this Eclipse 5303r head unit in my car for about 15 months now. I love it! It is far and away the best head unit I have ever owned. Nothing comes close to Eclipse in my book. It just appears to be all scratched up on the face, but you can see from the other picture, it isn't. I blends with the interior very well....
