You're correct about that. A basic rule of thumb is that in order to double the loudness you will need a tenfold increase in the amplification. That is because sound "operates" on a logarithmic scale [now I'll have to go back to my college textbook to verify

Oh...I "nominate" my head unit: the Alpine 3DE-7886 (now 3DE-7887). It flawlessly plays any CD-R that I've burned (and I've used seven different brands thus far). It doesn't play MP3s, it doesn't have CD-text capability, but I still think that it's a solid unit. I've had mine for three years (and with two Contours) without any major problems.
