My girlfriend had a 98 jetta GT, 5 speed. That thing had to be the slowest car ive ever driven -- I wouldnt bet on a few bolt-ons making too much faster (in fact I researched it and on the NA ones it is very hard to get any additional power out of them)

Toast that boat. Someone please check the gear ratio and weight. Those things are just as heavy.
Just Everything Takes This Auto
Trek = roof rack and 5 spd. Whoopie! You have an auto. so that doesn't help. Have fun when you keep up with him.

I can easily take a Jetta GT or Trek. When driven right, the TDI is quicker on the takeoff than a 2.slow.

amen. My friend just picked up a '03 jetta TDI and it seems like it could give my SVT a good run for its money. We haven't tried it though, becasue I'm not about to race my friend and he's got barely 800 miles on it and still needs to go easy for the break-in period. But after he clocks a few thousand miles he's talking about adding some goodies to try and boost the power, but isn't sure yet what to do.

I second (or third) that notion. I used to sell vdubs, and I drove quite a few of gas and diesel versions of the new beetle and golf. That TDi has gobs of torque for such a small vehicle (and engine). Launching the TDi involves not a whole lot of r.p.m.s, and just about dumping the clutch, almost trying to make it bog. They only rev like 1k r.p.s. at redline (exaggeration, don't flame me ), so it seems like you are constantly shifting. Most fun I ever had driving a diesel.

unless they juiced the 03 model they have 90hp or in that range.
my rommates dad has a jetta TDI and its slow as [censored]. initial punch is good as they some torque.
but my 87 honda accord SLAUGHTERED it after first gear.
my svt would put a few light years on it by 60.
