I am just wondering what the sypmtoms of bad cats are. My exhaust seems to be choking my car. I have no power above 3000 rpms(the car just makes a lot of noise, but does not really pick up speed) and my car seems to make weird popping noises every once in a while. My car has 142,xxx miles and these may still be the original pre-cats. I also have the SHO Shop main cat. Can i have an exhaust shop clean out the cats? Will the pre-cats eventually gut themselves or do i have to get new ones? Any help is appreciated.

Sounds like a classic case of deteriorated precats. You will almost certainly need to replace the main cat as well since it is collecting loose precat debris.

Better check if your car is under warranty for these parts (does not sound like it).

When I had similar problem at 70,000 miles, I went with MSDS headers, high flow cat and y-pipe from BAT, and a Bosal Cat-back. I later replaced the Bosal with a stock SVT exhaust to reduce noise levels.

This has made a huge seat of the pants difference in drivability and power and cost LESS than replacing the precats and main cat with stock Ford parts (although in my case if I could have stomached dealing with the Ford service department, I could have taken advantage of the warranty).

The cost of a pair of precats when I did this was around $1500 for the parts alone.

Installing headers can be tedious but is completely doable without a lift. Mostly a matter of patience and having the right hand tools.

Yeah, sounds like a pre-cat problem to me. My '96 SE suffered it at about 45k miles, replaced under the emissions warranty. At your mileage, you're out of warranty on everything. So I would follow the advice of the previous poster and go with headers and aftermarket everything. Why not pick up some additional power and sound since you have to replace it anyway, right?

This is not something you can ignore - its a problem that needs to be repaired ASAP, or it can lunch your motor. Excessive backpressure can cause detonation bad enough to burn a hole in your piston. There have also been cases of bits of broken precat material being sucked into the motor through the EGR, and sometimes through the exhaust manifold itself during vacuum conditions, particularly on deceleration. Once that happens, it scores the cylinder walls badly, and suddenly you need a new engine.
