Cooter's Garage drive
Pros
- It's a lot closer than Skyline and it's a cool drive.
- Cooter's Duke's of Hazard Museum is free to get in, and there is plenty of free parking as well.
- And let's not forget you'll get to see the General Lee in the flesh!
- However, due to Cooter's being closer, a barbecue is definitely an option after the drive, especially if we start in the morning.

Quote from kokopelian:
- As for a meeting/barbecue place, I propose Bull Run Park if the weather permits. Bull Run is a wide open park so football, frisbee, R/C toys, etc., are all doable. There are grills, picnic benches, common areas and tons of parking. All free! It's here in Manassas right down the street from me so if everyone brings a contribution to a cookout I can store the goods at my house before our drive and collect the grub for the cookout when we return. If the weather sucks, I suggest we do the Vienna Inn. Great, cheap food, similar to the Stained Glass Pub, plus age doesn't matter and it's open till like Midnite.

Cons
- It's nowhere near as scenic as Skyline.
- There are not many joints to eat at in/around the area.

=Skyline Cruise=
Pros
- 105 miles worth of twisties (one way if you go to the end) and the scenery is incredible.
- The drive getting there is good as well.
- Nice flat straight aways, with a minimum 70 mph speed limit.
- There are some good eating places in/around the area as well and they aren't expensive.

Cons
- $10 per car to drive the mountain.
- Skyline will begin to get packed around the end of September.
- It won't be over crowded, but there will be a lot of people in/around the area.
- A barbecue would be out as it would be impossible to do both given the distance.

Cooter's Garage is right by one of the main entrances to Skyline drive so why not do both ?

Can you tell I drive my car way too much ?

I was just up on skyline drive on my bike last weekend and it was great fun just riding around and taking in the views as well as riding around a bit on 211 (just as twisty as skyline drive) I might be back on skyline drive this weekend meeting up with my sister who is hiking the whole Appalachian Trail this year but I would still rather go to skyline drive if I have to make the choice.

Moxnix is right - Cooter's is on the way to Skyline Drive and not that much closer. If you do one, you might as well do the other.

I suggest we do the Vienna Inn. Great, cheap food, similar to the Stained Glass Pub, plus age doesn't matter and it's open till like Midnite.
Great place, but gets crowded, and parking sucks.

- Nice flat straight aways, with a minimum 70 mph speed limit.

No offense, but it's going to be too crowded to expect to drive fast. Plus it's really not safe to do so anyway. But that would still be my vote - drive along Skyline Drive, pick a spot to park/BBQ.

I think he was talking about the roads on the way to skyline drive not when you are on skyline drive itself. I know the roads I take to get there are not 70 mph roads but I will be coming from the other direction from most of you guys I think so I dont know about the roads you would be taking to get there. (I would be going thru charles town, WV to get there)

To clear things up. Yes I was talking about the roads on the way to Skyline specifically Rt. 66 and 81. The speed limit is 70 mph on them. And I have never run into traffic on either route. And as for me saying that Cooter's is closer, it is relatively speaking. If you take into account that Cooter's is a one way trip and the ENTRANCE to Skyline is not that much further than Cooter's, BUT you have 105 miles of road (one way) to traverse after entering the park. Top speed on the mountain is only 25-30 mph max in certain areas, not to mention stopping for the photo ops. So it will take a lot longer to do than just going to Cooter's.
