The cooling fan will not come on unless I turn on the AC?

I have replaced the sensor above the thermostate but it still will not come on?

What else could be the cause of this???

your engine side cooling fan motor is out

from experience i have learned that the cooling fan has 2 seperate fans one for the engine and one for the ac on my old car the ac one went out and like 6 months later both went out it was like 40 bucks for a used cooling fan

First of all, the fan is a 2 speed fan and it sounds like your Lo speed is out. There was a recall for the resistor blower on some models. There are also problems with wiring and fuse box connections on some models. I would suggest you call a Ford dealer and ask if any recalls apply on your vehicle and if they have been performed already (can look up by you VIN number).

You may want to do some searches on wiring or fuse box subjects.

The fans work fine but they only come on if I turn the AC on? If I had a problem with the fans I believe they wouldn't work at all?

You must have a 2.5L V6 . My 2.0L has one fan that runs at two speeds. I'd still check on recalls and do some searches in this forum.

No actually I have a 1998 2.0L 4 cyl sport with 132,000k.

I have 2 fans and they only work when I turn on the AC.

I think after 96 or something all 'tours were fitted with dual fans. There is a relay and a resistor involved for low speed operation, as mentioned, which if either were bad, your fans would only operate when the AC was on. The fans themselves are apparantly OK, but you most likely have an electrical problem in the other areas of the circuit.

any time the a/c is on you should have a fan on.. its part of the a/c circuit to have a fan running when the a/c is on. the other fan is controled by the heat of the engine.... i think it is the Engine temp. sensor... cost about $15 at auto zone... the sensor is screwed into the engine block and has two pins coming out the top that the wiring harness is connected to it with two wires.. not the one wire temp. sensor for the temp. gauge on the dash this is different and only has one wire, and cost about $6.00..
hop this helps.

The fans are wired in parallel so they should both operate at the same speed at the same time.

When using A/C, full battery voltage is applied to the fan motors to run them at full speed.

With the A/C off, fans are controlled by the PCMusing input from the ECT. When the PCM detects that coolant temperature is hot enough, it turns the fans on at LOW speed. If the temperature still rises until it hits a higher trigger point, the PCM turns both fans on at HIGH speed.

My advise is to check the fan dripping resistor, it is probably open if you have no low speed fan operation.

Consult the EVTM/schematics for your exact year/model for complete details.

It really helps to have an understanding of how the circuit works before you go off buying and swapping parts that "might" fix the problem.

Steve
