I agree, the minivan is the BEST way to go to schlep around kids stuff. Damn the folks who say they are not "cool", they are downright convenient and you won't kill your back stooping to put a baby in a car seat or to buckle older ones into a booster seat.
The sliding doors are also really convenient. You don't have to worry about enough room, kids dinging the car next to you, etc.
My wife toted around her first kid in a 91 Pontiac Sunbird 2 door. The upside was it had no airbags, so the kid rode in front. I know putting Camy (4 years old) in the back seat of the SVT or Prizm is a bigger hassle than in the minivan.
So don't rule out a minivan, just because others don't think they are cool.
Get what works for you, your budget and the heck with those who say they are not cool.
