The idea I got from the show was not that they needed to be fashionable, but rather trying to clean up their act for a significant other...I could be wrong, but I didn't watch it to analyze it either.
How would this show differ from another make-over show? Curb-Appeal? Is it still wasting money on something to impress someone else?

The industries producing the clothing, cosmetics, and decor do play on the insecurities of the population about their appearance, image, and worthiness. I agree this is an issue and promotes a shallow insecure culture.

The Fab 5 don't try to mold their subjects to a monolithic mold. Although Carson is a trendenista, the subjects are dressed in a manner to show fashion (what looks good and good on them) and style (makes the desired statement in character with the subject.) Trends and labels are pretty much ignored for more classic staple items.

Many of these people aren't taking care of themselves or their surroundings because they don't think they're worth the effort. These 5 show them just what they can be with a little effort, and that confidence can spill over into all facets of their lives. Looking good and feeling you ARE worth effort pays dividends.

On the prison murder, I read the killer was abused by men when he was younger. It does not say whether he was a child, juvenile, or adult when it occurred.

For some reason this just reminded me of that big dude with the nail in his head in Happy Gilmore. He has that shirt on that said "Guns don't kill people, I kill people" Just thought I'd share that. Carry on.

I agree with that, folks do need to take care of themselves and put some effort into looking good.

It is a sad fact of society that people do judge you based on how you look. And as you and I both allude to, even worse when some look down on others based on the labels attached to clothes, cars, etc.

Lori and I had a talk with our 13 year old girl about the people who worked at the local McDonalds. She really looked down upon them, as if they were second class citizens. (I really want to get her out of that snooty Catholic school she attends, but that is another topic.)

It didn't even occur to her that many of them could be hard working people who were just trying to catch a break, working their way through school, etc. I shared with her that sure, that might be the top jobs some of them might land, but that still doesn't make it ok for her to look down upon them solely based on vocation.

This also gets into cars for her. She hated when I would take her to school in the '87 LeSabre. She said her "friends" commented on it, and not in a favorable manner. Now, I've never been a 13 year old girl, but I'm pretty sure 13 year old girls don't really notice the details of other parents cars.

So the whole brand/label/trademark thing is a hot topic at Chez Boner for these very reasons. I imagine there is some of that in the school, since neither Lori or me are concerned with labels.

Sigh, someday I hope she sees the value of the character traits I've put on display, confidence, fiscal conservative, fair and hard working (well, there is the goof-off time on CEG at work)

It is so frustrating at times to see her place more value in the opinions of other inexperienced 13 year olds, than in her parents who've been around the block and know a thing or two.

However, I'm sure I will get my "payback" when I'm a grandparent. I just hope that is DECADES down the road

James I have to tell ya that Kyan Douglas was in my final project in college. It was a 60min. drama that I wrote/directed/edited. Imagine my suprise when I see him on a television show!!!

As for the show, I like what I've seen of it. I think it's funny and there is nothing wrong with helping people to dress better and feel better about themselves.

Good thread, btw, one of the best ones I've read in a while.

The show is hilarious, take it for what it is and not who it is. Have you seen the places these people live in? The one guy looked like he lived in a shelter, he had crap in every room, it was just a mess. Its not about whats fashionable, to me its common sense, who leaves dirty plates in every room of their house for weeks on end??

The Fab 5 never really promote a designer or a label, they show what a guy can do to make himself more confident. Women like confidence, guys want to be it, so its a good match.

Well, I watched most of an episode tonight. Seems the candidate was a "Greek God" (Ok, he is a kick boxing instructor/trainer from a Greek family.)

I'll admit, they didn't promote any particular designer, etc. But $500 for 10-20# of lamb for a bar-be-que isn't exactly within the grasp of the common man. However, I do have to say that I love Asparagas, so I may have to try some on the grill. But I'll be doing chicken or pork as the meat, and not boutique meat.

But they left us hanging about whether the Greek God hooked up with the girl who got interested all of the sudden. Where is the footage of that?

That better be some DAMN good lamb. I routinely pick up lamb racks and chops for FAR less (couple of pounds for, say $15). Good lamb can be had for around the price of a good T-bone at the right markets.

When done right, lamb is one of the most flavorable meats out there.

Give it a shot sometime.
