The industries producing the clothing, cosmetics, and decor do play on the insecurities of the population about their appearance, image, and worthiness. I agree this is an issue and promotes a shallow insecure culture.
The Fab 5 don't try to mold their subjects to a monolithic mold. Although Carson is a trendenista, the subjects are dressed in a manner to show fashion (what looks good and good on them) and style (makes the desired statement in character with the subject.) Trends and labels are pretty much ignored for more classic staple items.
Many of these people aren't taking care of themselves or their surroundings because they don't think they're worth the effort. These 5 show them just what they can be with a little effort, and that confidence can spill over into all facets of their lives. Looking good and feeling you ARE worth effort pays dividends.
On the prison murder, I read the killer was abused by men when he was younger. It does not say whether he was a child, juvenile, or adult when it occurred.
