For the last couple of days I've been working on installing a Sony tape deck with a ten-disc changer in the trunk.

Everything is installed and the radio works fine.

Problem is when I play a CD, it plays REAL, REAL LOUD.

What gives?

I by-passed the factory amp if that makes a difference.

Any and all help is definitely appreciated.

Thanks all,

Joel

Kind of a long shot, but some decks have a level control to change the volume of the cd to match the level of the radio. My Pioneer has it. This allows you to change between the radio and the cd player with no huge difference in volume. When I first installed my deck it did the same thing.

What about a reset switch for the head unit? Can that cause the unequal noise?

I remember being told to reset it before installing, but I couldn't see where.

It's a Sony tape deck model CX-9100, I think.

I had one on a old head unit. It was on the back. It could do the trick, if you have one. I dont have much experience with Sony decks.

Check the manual. The reset switch is probably under the faceplate. Some of the Sony's could be programmed to have different initial volumes depending on the source. Maybe your HU has this and the CD is switched to the loudest setting.

I hit the reset button, but still the same problem.

It seems that I have two volume settings: ATT(quiet, volume level zero, which is still audible), and no matter how high I swith the volume, it's the same level, LOUD. Volume one is the same as ten?

Could something be wrong inside the changer?
The radio works fine.

It almost sounds like you hooked up the changer directly to your amp. Not that you actually did that, but that would be the result. It seems to be bypassing the volume control completely. This is very strange. Is it under warranty?

I might have. I crossed up the wires. It's fixed now.

Thanks to all of you who helped.
