Michigan has two peninsula's, the lower and upper. Well, people in the upper peninsula are kinda...well i won't say hickish or canuckish but somewhere in between. Anyways, it's common to hear "we're headed to the U.P."

yeah, people from da UP of michigan are called yoopers. The further north you go the closer they sound to candians.  you ever watch the movie Fargo? I have heard yoopers that actually sound like that, even though that was north dakota. As a side note, people from the lower penn are refered to as trolls by the yoopers cause we live "under the bridge" meaning south of the mackinaw bridge.

I'm a yooper. Born in Baraga MI and now go to college at Michigan Tech. Not all of us up here have a crazy accent!!! I do know some far out Yoopers though.
