Ok I have made it through the summer without using it but I want to fix the problem. Probably back in june my AC just doesnt turn on anymore. I twist the knob and I hear the vents switching over but the compressor never turns on. It's like there is no connection. I hate using the AC as it is because it surges rediculously (when driving in traffic and especially in parking lots in first gear) but I would really like to have it for the defroster and hot days on longer trips.
Has anyone had this problem also? To me it doesnt seem like it needs to be recharged because it worked perfectly up until it wouldnt turn on. I just dont want to go to a mechanic for this one so he can charge me for finding the problem.
Thanks
Steve

I had the same problem for about 30min and then it started working again luckily. But I am worried it will quit like yours. Hopefully someone knows what is going on.

The first thing you need to check is the clutch on the compressor, it should not spin when the A/C is off, and should when someone turns it on. Watch for this while somebody turns it on/off inside the car while you're outside.

Kennard,

I too had my AC fail and I do not believe that it is do to a lack of the refrigerant (Rxx??). But due to more important things have not managed to fix it yet. If the clutch spins with the AC off, is a new clutch/compressor required.

Chris.

Thanks for the info. I'll check that out pretty soon. So if the clutch doesnt engage in the AC then it needs to be replaced? Or is there something else electrically related that may be a problem?
thanks
Steve

If you're low on the R134 coolant, your compressor clutch will not engage. If your sort of low it will turn on/off causing the surging you mentioned. Get a can of R134 from walmart with the recharge hose & guage and try charging your AC system. The low pressure side valve is like right in front of the battery on the AC line running across the front of the engine bay. Turn on the AC and start filling it, you'll probably see the clutch engage after a few minutes. (It takes a while...)

Before attempting to add refrigerent to a system, you must FIRST check the state of charge of the system. That means a guage must be used to see what the initial state of charge actually is. If there is an electrical problem and you try to force more refrigerant into an already fully charged system, you will simply create more problems.

I posted some testing info along with pictures back in May or June on how to check parts of the electrical circuits for the A/C system. A search should bring them up.
