Well the most of the parts stores around here didn't have the autolite number for me, just motorcraft and bosch. I got the number from this site. Do you recall the autolite part number of the ones you used kennard? As before autolite and motorcrafts used to be (and may still be) the exact same thing. The proper autolite zetec plug is APP5344.

So here's what we do.

Put the APP5344 in the #1,2 cylinders and the AP5364 into cylinders #3,4

Why would we do that?

What's the difference in the two ? Are 2 hotter or colder than the others ? My Ford parts guy said he had never heard of such a thing. I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just befuddled by this. I believe you if you say your owners manual says you should, I am just amazed that it does. It's just so wild.

I'm not sure, the plugs are in my van, I will get them out tonight and look at the number. (No not in the motor of my van, in the glovebox,, haha)

I was just kiddin'. I happened to notice that one type of plug failed in #1,2 and the other failed in #3,4. The mix & match idea was just a gag. Sorry.

Actually, because our cars have a waste spark type ignition, the APxxxx work on 2 cylinders and the appxxxx on the other 2. The polarity of 2 of the cylinders have the spark jump from center electrode to ground, so single platinum work on these 2. The other 2 cylinders have the spark jump from ground electrode to center elctrode, so a double platinum is needed. My Escort was this way. Factory had 2 different plugs in. Replacement called for all 4 to be double platinum to eliminate confusion and putting the wrong plug in the wrong cylinder.

AP is a single plat plug. APP is the double. Wally world makes the same mistake for the V6 and the little computer shows three acceptable plugs, a non-plat, a single plat, amd the double. Of course, Wally doesn't stock the double plats.

What I can't figure-out (other than why the car misses!) is where I bought the Motorcraft AZFS-22PP that were in the engine when I pulled them for the Autolites! I am CERTIAN that I never went to the Ford parts counter and bought $10.00 sparkplugs! I'd remember that! I am thinking that I bought them at a NAPA store. I know that I bought the new plug wires at Autozone, but they DEFINTELY don't sell Motorcraft because I checked. I was trying to beat the $10.00 per plug price!

I am completely baffled about the miss and I may need to get someone with a test computer/analyzer interested enought to look at the codes for me.

No you are right, Napa does sell SOME Motorcraft plugs, I stopped in there to see if I could beat the $6 each I paid. The Napa guy said they used to carry the Contour plug when there was a demand for them. The other Ford dealer in town (Vancouver Ford, the biggest bunch of thieves ever gathered in one area) wanted $11 each for them. I too am back to the miss, even with 2 brand new Motorcrafts in it to replace the two that had cracked insulators. It may be the coil pack, I was told that by a Ford mechanic. But I can't wait anymore, I'm going to bite the bullet and take it to Landmark Ford. They seem really honest and have been very helpful. Their MC plugs were only $6 each, and everyone else seems to be $10+. So I will be making an appt today. I will post the results.

When I removed the Autolite AP 5364 set I disvovered that the #1 and #2 cylynder plugs had SEVERELY cracked ceramic on the "outer" part of the plug. This is the part that says "Autolite AP 5364" and not the tiny ring seperating the electrode from the wire thing that you bend to set the gap.
It is not the part inside the cylynder.

I thought that MAYBE I cracked the #1 plug while removing it because ceramic parts flew all over the top of the engine. I hope and pray that none fell back in the open plug hole!
BUT!!! When I removed the #2 plug it had a HUGE crack running up the side of the ceramic, too! The #3 and #4 plugs look normal.

Here's what is scarey as hell...
I installed these plugs about a week ago!
They were not old plugs!

Well, the Tour has been in the shop for 3 hours, and they can not find the problem yet. They did quote me $70 for diagnosis, I wonder if they'll stick to that ? The service mgr said he'd have it DONE my 2 PM, and now it's 2:15 and they can't find the problem ??/ WOWOWOWOWOWOW, sounds freekin EXPENSIVE DON'T IT ? A funny bit though; when I took the rental car I had to sign a paper that said "if you don't bring our rental back we will keep your old car for collateral". I said YES !! A brand new Focus SE for my 99, 90K busted Tour ? SWEET !! Sign me up !!! She didn't think it was funny, especially since I couldn't keep my eyes off her, oh, let's say, mid-top section ??? She was, ahem, a rather pleasant looking person, with 2 rather large deformities, that she was definitely proud of, and her garment was unable to contain them all, but she was proudly displaying said objects of affection,,,,,,,,nyuck, nyuck (in the words of the immortal Curly)
