Alright, so I have been needing to gut my bank 1 precat for a good while now. Today, I decided to do it. Simple enough right?

Wrong....

I had one freaking stud break on me, and it has turned everything to crap! On the bank 2 precat, the stud located closest to the oil pan.

I knew something like this would happen since everything under there is rusted to *bleep* and back. So before I started, I ran out to the parts store to got some bolts and nuts just in case.

My problem is this... I cannot for the life of me, which right now is not adding up to much, get the darn stud out of the flange. I knew it was pressed in, but !!!!

I really don't see a way to get a small press, sort of like a ball joint puller, on the flange. So how can I get it out? I have beat on it until my arms are like rubber and I have started thinking about paying the neighbors to take turns at it! Actually beating on it is not doing much good other then flaring the end of it out.

And yes, of course I have used a lubricant and it was not WD40. It was some stuff called Moovit by Lloyds. It worked great on helping break the others loose.

A couple of ideas...Try PD Blaster as a solvent. I removed every one of the screws from my 1985 Nissan PU's exhaust manifold's heat covers. Many of these were very rusted after 18 years. I sprayed them all down a couple times and let them sit for a few hours. Every one screwed right out...no breakoffs or tight ones. Can buy at Wally-World for approx $4.00 a can. BEST stuff I have ever used. Comes out in an orange foam.
Next, sometimes, one can make use of a dremel tool to make a slot for a screwdriver blade or repair a bolt enough for a socket again. Yours may be beyond that....

You are talking about the stud at the collector on the headers, right? Well I had my headers completely off so I had better acess to the studs, butI just shot the stud good with WD-40 and used vise grips to unscrew it, and it came out. Remember lefty loosy, righty tighty.

or you can drill it out and re-tap the hole.

dak507, naw I don't work for Unisys. I do work for Xerox though. When picking a screen name for the site, my wife was talking to me about something to do with the company Unisys at the time, so I just used it. Sort of how I did with my geocities account - I really like the song YYZ by Rush and the year that album was released, that song was on, was in 81. The rest as they say is history, sort of like my arms right now...

Oh man....This just looks like an all day fun fest.....

You may be able to drill it out. Other than that, I have no idea. Bummer.

Take it to an exhaust shop. They can torch it, and then pound it out.
