I am still running my stock HU (I know..it sucks..) but I have a question..

Has anyone had problems with the stock or aftermarket when it comes to burning CD-Rs?

I know that some CD-Rs don't work but my real question is the ones I make skip more easily then the CD's that you buy. Just wondering if that has to do with the HU or CD-R's in general.

If it is HU then what is one that might not do that?

This is a common problem with the stock deck. My dealer would not help, (allegedly, it is not designed to play CDRs. The deck was designed for 1995 intro, so the deck is probably 1992 or 1993 technology).
I took it to the best repairperson in town. His was unable to help. There are no trim adjustments to make to help it track better. Some CDRs work better than other. Phillips seemed to work the best for mine.

I'm running my cassette right now until I decide what I want to buy. The Alpine 7563 seems like a good unit if you like the styling.

the stock hu is very picky w/cd'rs. it likes certain brands of media burned at certain speeds.

as far as aftermarket goes, there are many head units that play cd'rs: alpine, jvc, pioneer to name a few. if you look at the detailed descriptions of head units at www.crutchfield.com it will tell you if it plays cdrs.

the best way is to go find a display model at a store, take some of your cdr's and see how well it plays them.

I've run 5-6 different brands of CD-R's and found that in my factory unit Imation 700mb CD's work great. Never had a problem with reading yet...

Can you fill me in on what software you're burning with, and at what speed?

Thanks.

I'm a mac guy so I burn my stuff with adaptec toast 4.1 and have no problem burning at 12x speeds. My wife uses adaptec easy cd creator 4 on her PC and seems to have good results as well.

I burn with Adaptec 4. I have a S&F CD-R/RW that burns at 6x. I never get buffer underruns nor does the skipping happen in the wifes Jeep.

I do notice that only a few CD-R work. I have had great success with Memorex. Maxell is ok too, but kodak and some others do not work in the car.

Do you know if the Aiwa CDC-MP3 is any good? It looks like it plays MP3's.

Also..I have been thinking of making my own MP3 changer. I have some old parts from PC's and Laptops that I was going to put together. Did anyone out there try that? I see sites on the Net that talk about it but just was wonder if anyone had some feedback.

Concerning a mobile MP3 unit (changer): The Jan./Feb. 2001 issue of Maximum Linux discusses this. IMO, it's worth a look.

the people who own the aiwa on this site, seem to love it. the only complaint i have heard is that it takes a while to load. other than that, it seems to be a pretty good unit.

The Aiwa CDC-MP3 does take a little while to load. About 7-13 seconds on initial insertion of the disc. After that it is fine. And you can specify folders of music when you burn so you can skip from folder to folder for different styles of music. Plus it reads ID tags so song/artist can be displayed as well. Mine should be arriving Tuesday
