Jazzman,
I just called my brother that works in my building to have him bring his digital camera to work. So, I should get some pictures posted either today or tomorrow. I'm not taking it down though.
So far, what Dave has said is what I've done with great sucess. The 3/4" MDF board looks like a spacer, but was done because the particular woofer I got has a large excursion (Xmax) and might have hit the metal a little. However, the metal itself will not block too much sound because bass is less directional and doesn't reflect, as stated is some earlier posts. In the same respect, though, the glass right above the package tray will not reflect it much either so it is heard from outside the car. (The insulation in the Contour isn't great because I hear most of the frequency band outside my car at moderate sound levels.)
I think this is how the woofer/MDF/deck is attached. My brother worked on this mostly as I was working on running the wires/replacing the head unit. From bottom to top installation. He used silicone seal between the woofer and the MDF board. Then just drilled pilot holes in the metal deck for some metal screws (with points) through the woofer mounting holes, through the MDF board, into the deck. I think there were eight screws used. Oh, I think a piece of foam was placed between the wood and metal for vibration as well.
I'll go take the pictures at lunch time today if my brother brings the camera in. If he brings the cable to copy to the PC, I can post them today, other wise, tomorrow. When we go take the pictures, I'll verify the procedure above, and post amendments as required.
