Ok, I bought Pioneer 5X7's for the doors. The problem is they sound worse than the stock speakers. I can't turn the bass up as loud and they vibrate. I am using a basic Sony HU pushing 45Wx4. I would also like more bass in the trunk but not have the trunk rattle. I was thinking about putting in a couple of free-air 8"s mounted under the rear window area. Any thoughts?

To get rid of the bass in your door speakers go to your audio store and have them install CAPS on the door speaker lines that will filter out the lower Freq. that will eliminate the bass and distortion from your door speakers...... cleans up the signal and only lets certain higher Freq through. If I was you though I owuld take back the 5x7's an since you want some 8" for your back ledge just get some components with tweeters and crossovers...they will sound awsome....Boston just released there new 5x7 components they are like 300.00 bucks i think...and that will give you good bass... and treble through the doors... Thanks for the advice. Pardon my ignorance, but what are CAPS? Is that like putting resistors along the speaker wires? The reason I got the Pioneers was I got 4 for $120. I can get most of this stuff wholesale. I would like some bass in my door speakers as well, until I get the $$$ for the 8"s. It's driving me nuts that I have to keep the bass turned down to avoid the rattling. It would be alot easier to experiment if it wasn't such a pain in the a$$ to get to the speakers!

yeah caps are like resistors for Hz. only lets higher freq. through so that bass does not come through the speaker...just the highs....

pioneer also makes some 6x8s. A little more expensive, but a little more surface area. model numbers are ts-a6815, 6855, 6865, 6895.
I listend to some of the 65's, and bought them, but had to return them cuz I lost my job, and money is tight.
They sounded fine to be, certainly better than stock.
Good luck.

Capacitors or bass blockers are used to as a first order low freqency reducer when used in series with a resistance such as a speaker. It's a cheap, but effective way to keep a speaker rom outputing low freqencies that it cannot effetivly handle.
About 8" woofers in the rear deck, I have one where the 6.5" hole is already. A second one would be much more work. Anyway, the speaker was only $50 so you shouldn't have to save up too long.
I'm sure Dave will pop in with more specific details for caps and free air thughts.

You are not alone klavender, I also bought Pioneer 5x7 two-ways and thought the stock speakers sounded better. The Pioneers went back!

I really appreciate all the help. What type of free air speaker do you have? Does it produce enough bass? I'll have to take the door panels off again to figure out why the 5x7's sound so crappy. I'm not trying to be heard around the block, just want some clean bass with no rattling. Thanks again.

i left the stock door speakers in the rear and got a good component set up front. because the stock speakers have really good bass especially the rear, but the mids and highs suck so get a component set or just the tweeter in the front.

Dayton Loudspeaker Thruster 8" http://www.geocities.com/dalvenjah18/images/98se.JPG It's enough bass for me. The 8" Thruster is good, the 15" doesn't impress me. Very low FS at 31.6Hz and large Xmax (8.7mm) for an 8". It would probably be better in a sealed box, but I didn't want to give up the space or add weight. And it was only $50 plus and amp.
