Generally speaking,
advancing the intake gear 1-2 degrees,
and retarding the exhaust cam the same amount,
will net some gains.
You can also try setting them at the drag strip,
but only if your a very consistent driver.
Dyno is really the way it should be done,
but I would dyno cam & cam gears at the same time.
Just install the gears at 0,0 for now.
