Regarding the 8" Free air sub --
where is the 6.5" hole in the deck you were talking about? does the woofer protrude into the cabin? or is it under that material by the rear window?
Thanks Brian

It's on the passenger side. If you look from in the trunk, you'll see it.

I have pioneer 6x8's in the doors of my car. i had terrible rattles in my doors untill i got a 10" polk sub and took all the bass off of the door speakers. my trunk doesn't rattle at all either so i'm all set. I think pioneer makes an 8" free air sub too. i've thought of just adding 6.5" component midbass drivers to the rear deck. yeah i know a lot of work, blah, blah, blah i've got the tools and the time just not the money. so yeah, that's what i think.
don't drink and drive.

My woofer is mounted under the deck, with a spacer that has an enlarged hole. I cut away the padding, but not the carpet over the deck, so you cannot see it from inside the cabin. You can only see it move at higher volumes. As Dave said, the hole is on the right side, look in the trunk. A second one on the drivers side would be difficult because of the center 3rd point seatbelt.

I started to do that with the decklid but I was having trouble with getting the cardboard away from the carpet. My main goal was to make a bass port for my 2 12's. Well I got frustraited when trying to cut out the cardboard without stretching the carpet. Well, when I got done, it looked like $hit. So I just cut out the hole. I found an older speaker grill that is 6 1/2 in size which is the exact hole size. I mounted the speaker grill on there. At first I was like, what the heck have I done to my car. Well, I get nothing but compliments on it now. Looks real sharp and it really helps the bass get into the cabin where it belongs. It's kinda funny, when I have some girls in the backseat with longer hair, their hair flops around when the bass hits.. If I were to run the single 8" free air sub in the rear deck where the existing hole is (behind the right rear passenger), would it fill the car with enough bass? Let me rephrase -- does the sound fill the car nicely, or does the bass seem to come from that area of the car and filter out? I don't want the right side of the car to have more bass than the left side, and I also don't want to slice and dice the rear deck, either... I like the idea of having a hidden 8" sub. Also, please explain how an 8" will fit around the 6.5" hole back there?

If you cross the sub over at about 100 hz or below, you'll have a hard time placing it with your ears. You'll have to bottom mount the sub. Otherwise, it won't fit. I would recommend making a baffle out of 3/4 material (MDF/plywood) and mount the speaker to the under side of the wood. This will give the speaker the room to move if you end up with a high excursion sub.

Hey Dave --
By "bottom mount" to a "baffle", is this what you mean?
I attach the 8" sub to a piece 3/4" MDF, with an 8" diameter opening. Then I attach the MDF to the rear deck, effectively using the MDF as a "spacer" or a 'step' between the speaker itself and the rear deck.
What would I use to attach the MDF to the rear deck without it looking silly... nuts and bolts?
Thanks again.
Brian

That is basically what I was describing. I have never done this so maybe someone else can comment on how to attach. I would think that by removing the material from the top of the deck, you could attach it with some screws/bolts from the top.
