I have 2 Polk 12" MOMO series...the specs say that.88 is the size box to seal one into....but the box that they are in now is about 1.1+ so I'm wondering if that could be the reason as to why if I crank it up they sound horrible...and at really low BASS they distort really bad also....I had some cheaper Pioneer Premiers...that sound 20 times better...I know these Polk subs are supposed to be some of the best on the market.....so why do they suck.....is it the box air volume??????

I'm not entirely sure, but I think some subs require the pressure a smaller enclosure provides to work properly. If I were to take my subs out of the box and set them on the table, they wouldn't sound right. My subs need pressure behind them to work properly. Basically what a sub does is move air. If there is no pressure behind the sub (like from being in a box) The sub looses excursion length (how far the cone moves back and forth) and you lose some of the air moving qualities of the sub. That's why it's important to properly tune a ported box, if the ports are too big for that sub, then it wont sound as good. That was the problem I had. My old box had almost 2.5 cubic feet of air for each sub and it had two 5.5" wide ports on each end. My subs were not designed for this enclosure and therefore sounded about as good as a much cheaper sub. I was missing out on the tight bass a smaller box would have provided. If I'm all wrong, dnewma04 will correct me, but I think that's right.

Yeah these subs are not supposed to be ported.....Sealed at .88cu and it is way over that......A quick question....during the break in period will the quailty of the bass be extremely bad at high volume..cause they are not all the way broken in yet...

Really, the subs should be fine with a 1.1 cubic foot enclosure. It should actually provide deeper bass but at the expense of a little power handling. If you want to experiment with a smaller enclosure, throw in some blocks of wood, equivalent to .22 cubic feet and listen. That will give you the equaivalent of .88 and show you how it should sound.

BTW, in a sealed system, volume is much less critical than in a ported system.
