Well, I started it up to leave the office again, and voila! It was back to normal. The only thing I did was remove the plastic engine cover, fiddle with what looked like an ever-so-slightly loose black rubber electric plug underneath the water pump, and it was ok for two starts and shutdowns.

How much is a temp. sending unit? Easy job?
