hi- we have a 95 Mystique 6-cylinder 5-speed with about 90k miles- took it to the dealer because there was a noise when shifting from 2nd to 3rd and tach shows 3000 RPM- we thought it might be transmission-(synchros) - dealer said it is an "upper bearing" which is terminal, and to drive the car until it breaks. we called another dealer who advertises rebuilt engines (cost about 4K installed) but the person in the service dept said it is more likely a "cam gear" and to have the cam gears repaired would be about 1000 dollars. any opinions? thanks!!

Don't go to the dealer, take it to a good mechanic.

we took the car to a transmission place, the guy there said the trans was fine, but some cables were loose. we then took it to the Mercury dealer( instead of Ford) who said the power steering cable was against the heat shield, he put it back where it belonged, no charge, and so far, so good, no more noise.
