I wouldn't go there if you paid me...oh, wait, they DO pay me and I DO go there every day.... Actually, it's a good choice; my office is two blocks from the Air and Space museum, and every lunch hour I can hit the streets and misdirect tourists...
Hmm.. by office do you mean sidewalk at the top of the escalator from the Smithsonian metro stop? Any by misdirect, do you mean sell overpriced maps
DC ain't so bad for a visit, and suburbia wasn't too bad of a place to live. Lots of history, culture, etc. You and your better half can go to a show at the Kennedy Center, National Theater, or Ford's Theater and leave the kids w/ the in laws for the night. Day trips to Civil War battlefields to explore. More museums than you could hope to see in a week.
Take the metro to said Smithsonian stop and you have nature, adventure, and history within walking distance. Natural Histoy Museum, Air & Space Museum, and American History Museum. Or the US Botanic Garden, FBI building, and the Holocaust Museum. Might could even trick the kids into seeing an art museum or two. You get the picture...
