I while back someone asked about swapping SVT cams into a non SVT Duratech V6. Has anyone done this yet? If not I guess I'll be the first. I'm pretty sure I'll have to swap the computer also. Can anyone confirm this?

I don't think many have done this yet if at all because of the rather prohibative cost vs the HP gained. Most are more concerned with $ to HP myself included. I would be interested however to see what kind of gains could be yeilded. As for the SVT computer I'm not sure but wouldn't it be easier/better to get yourself a custom chip burned instead?

Let me explain the whole picture.
I've got 98 Mystique - 2.5 Duratech that is going to be supercharged with the Vortech V-9 F Trim unit. The computer I'm told can't support the revised valve timing that goes along with the SVT cams. This is the area that's get grey for me. I'm hearing conflicting stories on how the non-SVT and SVT computers handle this valve timing information.

Vortech is the only source for programming the computer once a supercharger has been installed. A superchip is out of the question. Vortech actually lays completely different IC chips on the circuit board of the computer. Then why not ask Vortech you say? Those are the guys I'm talking about with the conflicting stories. Imagine that!

As far as horsepower gains go, I'm told by some rather respected sources that a minimum of 30hp will be realized.
I have had 2 sources tell me that I should see an honest 50hp gain.

DAMN!

I really do think the SVT profiles are outstanding and near impossible to beat for the power curve...

However there is no way they give 30HP much less 50HP. More like 10-12HP or 5-6% of the gross HP. Stop respecting those sources...

IMO you could see gains of up to 20HP with a very hot NA 3L or forced induction.

Now they do produce a much stronger and longer powerband though. That in itself is worth having!

Also if you could get a set of adjustable cam gears then all bets are off...

Not true. Plain & simple.

Vortech does no such thing. All they ship with the kit is a GENERIC chip with a close approximation of what everything should be set at. Definitely NOT a great way to tune an engine much less one that is force fed!!!

You will want a custom chip burned. It's the TUNER that matters. Not the chip. Pick your Tuner wisely...

Vortech didn't send a chip with my supercharger.
My computer is supposed to get shipped back to their research facility so it can get the new modifications. Vortech is being quite technical with this matter. They are asking for calibration codes and the sort. When it's all said and done the old IC's will be shipped back to me with the upgraded computer. I just need to verify the valve timing issue. I not saying your wrong about other chips working but this application is very specific and I'm paying a premium price for this service. I'ts just that Vortech has never recieved a request like mine before.

You are not getting "special" "technical" "top secret" IC chips installed into your PCM. You are getting a "generic" add on chip. (ala superchips, diablo, etc)

I use the term "generic" since it will not be dyno "TUNED". Therefore you are getting Vortech's guesstimation of what the parameters should be for your particular application.

You will still want a custom "dyno tuned" chip!

Vortech always asks for your computer to be shipped to them. What they do is use a generic chip (mine is superchip) and put a sticker over it. If you break the sticker, you void your warrenty. That's it. If your computer comes back with "special" tuning I will commend you, otherwise I'd ask for your premium payment back.

Btw, I think you are the first mystique that I know of with forced induction.

I'm was wondering how do you know what they do with the chip??? I understand you know alot and you have a s/c, I was just wondering how you could tell.

Could you rephrase the question? I'm not sure I understand what exactly you're asking. I'm not trying to be rude, I'm just not sure what you mean.

How do you know that its a generic chip, and not a custom program?
