I can't find any pictures of what the motor mounts should look like for this 1998 Mercury Mystique. The Haynes
manual and the one link I could find here in the search DO NOT SHOW the same mounts! My one question is the motor mount on the passenger side. Right next to the timimg belt there is this metal loop that rest on a nub. The books show nothing like this. They show a black metal bar that goes from one end of the motor to the other. Well this bar is not on this car and there is only a silver loop resting over a nub. What I can't figure out is why there is this black ring with holes or dents all around it 1 inch above in the nub? And what does it do right there?

If I just had a picture to see... or show.

Hi TronX,
There is several other postings recently about these POS mount mounts. You may want to read about everyone's fun times with these motor mounts. I have a 1998 Merc Mystique 2.0 Zetec at home too that I replaced the center rubber inserts on the front and rear mounts. These 2 mounts have round circular iron pieces with rubber inserts inside. Yes, they can be done with engine in car with a jack to support engine. Good Luck, Duane Koss / Blue Springs, MO

I'm sure I can get under the car to fix anything.
My beer belly prevents undercar work..hehe

When I look at the front mount in the center right behind the fans. This mount looks like it's taking alot of weight. It's not bullseye center but I see the rubber around it.
I looked at the one under the intake ail filter and that one looks okay also. I can't see the other rear on passenger side. The one at top near the coolant and steering fluid is the one in question..

I'm going to draw this into a picture with adobe real fast.. BRB

I know it's not good.. but the yellow and green stuff in the collant tank. Thats what the nub would look like wiht the black ring around it and the metal loop that's 1 inch below it.

Hi again Tronx,
You did a good job on your drawing. There also is the one in back near the power steering sector on the rack and pinion. I found both front and rear units cracked and split open...ie..the rubber inserts were broken badly. Replaced the inserts and the shifting improved 2000%. No more motor flopping in there loose.
I removed both units one at a time after supporting with a jack properly. Ended up removing center bolt first then took entire mount out in 2 sections. You must be good at puzzles to figure this out but it works. The rear one come up from the top...Just take your time and think SAFETY all the time...Good Luck...Duane in KC..
PS the one is the drawing you did is the one that you must remove when you do the timing belt change or water pump replace. Easiest of the 4 to do...

Yeah.. I've been having some shifting issues. Also there
is a chirping noise that get loader as the car warms up and
the AC is on. I should probly replace all the moto mounts
because I'm not sure.. they do look smushed and old.

That picture I have.. should it look like that?
I guess my question is should the metal loop
be on the black strip or under it?

If I was to goto PepBoys all I need is the
Motor mount inserts right? I'm not sure I
can do this myself. I'm too scared having to
jack up the engine and be under that car.

I tried jacking up the engine last night and umm..
well it would just keep going. I placed it under the
area with the front mount. I don't see any spots for
the jack to go. Should I do this with a car tire jack?
I've sen those bigger jacks that can lift trucks...

I wish I had one of those bars that would run across the top and lift the engine up.

for the engine, you just need a jackstand/lift with a piece
of wood, and let the oil pan rest on it lighly.
it is really a super-safe precaution, since if you remove
only one of the four mounts at a time, the other 3 will
hold the engine just right.

don't try to lift on the engine too much... of course the
system has a lots of flex in it and you can lift it several
inches even with all the mounts in place...

Yah.. I need a better jack for this job.
I think with the right tools and the right
people I could do these easy.

Right now I'm in a tight spot... I need a
Van because I have 4 kids. I've got 2 more
years to pay on this car and that's about
5000$+ left to pay. If I trade in my car the
blue book value is only like 3300$ Max so that
would mean I'm paying them 2000$ to take my
car and sell it for 3 times that amount.

I'm looking for a cheap van that looks nice
and well not brake down on me.

Maybe you guys have a better idea for me?
I could pay off 1000$ off the car right now
and then double the payments for the next
6 months. Then at that time I'd have my Tax
return and use that money to put down on a
car and pray my motor mounts hold and the
the oil gaskets don't burn up the car.

Hi... again

I'm going to buy a jack stand and maybe a few others jacking tools.

What part numbers am I looking for at that ford online place again? Can you link me the parts so that I don't buy the wrong stuff. Also what sort of tools do I need to take them off and on? My last question is are there any pictures of what these should look like when I'm done and where do I jack the engine up the safe way?

Yah.. I know it's alot of questions. Bare with me.. I learn fast.
