What about getting the smallest wheel (a steelie) and letting all the air out, and having one of those portable air inflators? I know it's not much but it'll be close right?

How about my previous idea of making a "trunk mat" of appropriate thickness out of particle board or something similar?

Cris'pus, that seems to be a good idea, especially since i was thinking about getting a portable electric air pump anyway. Does completely flattening a tire mess with the balanceing or anything though?

Balancing has to do with the wheel, not the tire. It's not like you'll need to take out all the air. You wouldn't be riding on your THAT long anyways....lemme know if it is lower, thanks

balancing is for the wheel and tire as an assembly. You're right that just letting the air out won't disturb balance, but if the tire was rotated around the wheel (not likely), then the assembly should be re-balanced

Rotating a tire around a rim is next to impossible when the beads are sealed. If you cause enough force to disturb the tire orientation, you have probably caused the bead to break (unsure how transporting it in your trunk could do that) and therefore rendering a portable air pump useless.

or u could save urself time and money and not go through all that trouble and just put a spare in there, i mean do u care that much on how it looks, it wont be that way for long, just get a new tire when one goes flat

I really donâ??t care what it looks like at all (hence the steel wheel discussion). I am much more concerned with function.

Thanks guys. So let me see if Iâ??ve gotten this straight. It should be alright to store a partially deflated tire in the trunk, and I shouldnâ??t have to worry about balancing. I could then inflate with a portable unit. Right? CWSVT1, I agree with you that the spare is ok, but only for city driving. Hereâ??s what happened.

I was driving home (to Portland) from Spokane (where I go to school) when I accidentally ran over a pipe. I was going 70 mph on an interstate. AND GET THIS. THE PIPE FELL OF ANOTHER CONTOUR! Some ladyâ??s exhaust fell off I think and I was able to straddle it with my front two tires but then it hit MY exhaust and then hit the tire and put a nice big hole it my almost brand new tire. So I had to wait for AAA to come out and give me a tow, since I didnâ??t want to use my 50 mph donut with other drivers going 70-80 mph around me. I was towed to another city, since between Spokane and Portland there is a LOT of nothing. The drive to a place to get it fixed could easily be 50 miles at highway speeds. This is why Iâ??m interested in getting a full size spare. I then had to purchase a non-matching tire. Because I drive where there is barely even cell phone coverage quite frequently Iâ??m interested in a full size spare.

Just thought I would give some background and make sure I understood what you guys were saying. Thanks

I have a 99 SE Sport. I had a similar flat. I put the donut on. But even deflated, the standard tire sticks up about 2 inches into the trunk. The tire fits in the well, but it is above the floor level inside. It reduces the trunk space somewhat. If you can live with this, just do it.

Really though, how long would it take to remove a tire and check for yourself. You will immediately know whether the fit is acceptable.
